Buying A Used Computer Does Not Have To Be Nerve Racking

Buying a used PC can save you a lot of money but you need to be sure to check the computer very carefully prior to buying. There is nothing worse than spending a whole lot of time getting a new computer all set up, customizing it to your liking, loading all your software on it and transferring all your files to it and having it fail soon after. Fortunately there are some simple steps you can take to diminish the risk a used computer being a lemon. Buying a used computer is also an excellent way to get a system complete with upgrades such as a USB TV tuner for very little or for free.

Probably the worst thing to have fail on a computer is the hard drive because you risk losing your data. Unfortunately it is tough to inspect the mechanical components of a hard drive before you buy a computer. Buying a used computer involves a bit of a leap of faith as it relates to the hard drive. Hard drive failures can be caused by internal issues such as the needle slipping and scratching the disc which will lead to failure. Some hard drive failure is due to mechanical failure others are due to ordinary wear and tear. The read and write heads of a hard disk are used to retrieve and write data to a hard disk that is rotating at a high speed. Over a time the risk of failure or malfunction of a hard disk increases.

Full system hard drive scans can detect and repair potential problems with hard drives. Bad disk sectors can be detected and often times fixed by a system scan. The size of hard drive and amount of data on it affect the time it takes to perform a system scan. A full disk scan is often impractical to perform before buying a used a computer because of the time it takes. Skipping a full system scan before buying a computer is not recommended.

The CPU is another component that is critical to a computers performance. It is possible for the CPU to freeze. The primary cause of CPUs freezing is overheating. CPUs have a fan and heat sink to keep the unit cool but the fan can wear out or not function properly due to the accumulation of dust and dirt which can result in the CPU overheating. It is fairly easy to check if the fan is functioning properly by listening to it and looking for excessive dust. When functioning properly, a fan should produce a quiet, consistent sound. Rattles, squeaks or variations in the sound or the volume can indicate a fan that is on the verge of failure.

If the computer includes a monitor is should be inspected too. A monitor that is close to failing will often have dull colors and will not be crisp. Monitors should not flutter or have lines and should not make more than a very low hum. The health of a monitor is even more important if the computer has a USB digital TV tuner.

A computers operating system should be checked as well. Over time operating systems can slow down due to programs being added and deleted from the system. The registry can also become cluttered with deleted programs. More most people about the only way to inspect a computers operating system is to reboot is several times. A computer should not take overly long to boot up. Ideally, after you purchase a used computer the hard drive will be re-formatted and the operating system and software reloaded.

Any other hardware should also be inspected. This includes, devises like CD or DVD drives, the drawers should open and close smoothing and you should be able to read data from a disc and if they are writable drives you should be able to write to a disc. Other items that should be inspected are the USB TV tuner card, mouse and keyboard.
