Computer networking, usually called datacom or data communication is the practice of linking two or more computer systems with each other to exchange information. Computer networking is considered a branch of computer science, IT, telecommunications and/or computer engineering since it greatly depends on the theory and practical application of these mentioned areas.
There are three kinds of computer networks namely the internet, intranet and then the extranet.
- The Internet - is a global system of networks of computers that are connected. These networks use Internet Protocol Suite which is either TCP or IP, which serves millions of computer users throughout the world.
- The Intranet - in contrast to the internet, the intranet is a private computer network. Although the intranet makes use of Internet Protocol technology, the information is secured within the company and not shared to the entire world.
- The Extranet - at the same time is actually an extension of a company's intranet. Its primary purpose is to allow users from outside the firm like vendors, partners, and suppliers to access some data and information.
Here are a few of the many ways of networking computers:
- Local Area Network - or more commonly known as LAN, is a small network of computers in a small area. One example of LAN is a network of computer systems in a building.
- Metropolitan Area Network - or MAN is just like LAN. The significant difference is that MAN is used in a larger scale like metropolitan areas or states.
- Wide Area Network - or WAN is a much larger network compared to MAN and is utilized to cover larger geographic areas.
- Wireless LANs and WANs - are like WAN and LAN and the only difference is the fact that they are wireless.
In computer networking, there are lots of ways to interconnect computer systems like the use of coaxial cables, optical fibers, and also through power lines. But as technology improvements there are newer ways to do this such as wireless technology which includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
