Satellites were placed into orbit and became important to daily communications. Manned space journey became possible and human beings walked on the surface of the moon. TV in place of radio became the basic means of both amusement and news dissemination and this influenced politics and leisure entertainment.
Medical breakthroughs involved the extensive use of vaccines that eradicated the scourge of smallpox globally and polio was largely put under control too. Most of what had been known as the typical childhood diseases have become anything but prevalent in the age of baby boomers. Organ transplants are no longer rare, blocked blood vessels in the heart can be repaired or bypassed, several cancers are treatable, and surgeries once thought to be impossible are now routine. Even test tube babies became possible with the birth of in vitro fertilization.
