Why Crate training Your Dog is Important

How to Crate Train a Dog

First thing to consider when you crate train your dog is that you have to start young. This is because an older dog that has never been in a crate may grow nervous since it will have a tougher time adjusting to the small area.

To start with, place the crate in the family room or somewhere where there are a lot of people. At night, you can place the crate in your room to give them a presence safety close by. After a month or so, you'll be ready to leave them in one.

Remember that the crate is neat and comfortable enough to sleep in. And also put a nearby source of water and a toy for your pup to play with. Also remember that the crate should be only be large enough for him to rest in. Simply because if it's too big, he can walk around in it and he could make a mess in it.

Also make sure that you don't pull the dog out of the crate if he gets upset. By doing this, you will only teach the pup that you will give him attention if he makes a commotion, making you relinquish your established dominance. To stop this from happening you can take the pup out when he has been quiet for at least 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, you can give him all the attention they want to reinforce that what he did is right.

At first, you can try leaving your puppy in the crate for brief periods of time - an hour or so at a time. As he matures you can match the increase in time to a full night of sleep or a day at work.

With these tips you can properly crate train your dog and you'll be sure that your dog never gets too loud, nervous, or devastating when you leave the home.
